Spear, a Gilbert Associates Inc. design, is 154 ft long and 38 ft wide with the capacity to hold 250 passengers and 23 Need It.vehicles. The double-chine steel passenger vehicle ferry was delivered early in 2022 to Maine State Ferry Service. Both companies are PVA members. It entered service in May between Rockland and Vinalhaven 71 Sea Island Explorer in Penobscot Bay, Maine. The vessel has a main propulsion plant consisting of two Caterpillar C32 diesel engines coupled with two Twin Disc MGX 5225DC 4.03:1 reverse/reduction gears. The service speed will be achieved with Sound Propeller Services 4 bladed, 64 diameter stainless steel propellers. The installed generators consist of two John Deere 99kW ships service gen-erator sets; a dedicated John Deere 300kW bow thruster genset; and a John Deere 55kW emergency diesel generator. Spear conforms to the applicable regulations of a 46 CFR Subchapter K Passenger Vessel. The vessel is designed to have a gross regulatory tonnage of less than 100 GT.
