b"VESSEL:SalvoNAVAL ARCHITECT:Elliott Bay Design GroupTYPE:Passenger and vehicle ferryPVA member Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) designed a new dou-ble-ended River Class ferry for the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The ferries, with capacity for 300 passengers and 40 vehicles, were designed specifically for operation between the Hatteras and Ocracoke Terminals where water depths can be less than 10 feet along the route, with a design draft of 4.5-feet. The vessel utilizes die-sel-electric propulsion and four azimuth drives. Two vessels of this design, the Salvo and Avon, were contracted for con-struction. The Salvo has been delivered to Manns Harbor, N.C., where she will undergo acceptance trials prior to entering operation, initial-ly on the Cherry Branch-Minnesott Beach route over the Neuse Riv- Eachyear, thousandsofpreventablemaritime er.
